“I don’t really think it’s possible for humans to be at the same time conscious and comfortable. Though we may be moved by nature to thoughts of grace, though art can tease our minds toward eternity and love’s abundance make us dream a love that does not end, these intuitions come only through the earth, and the earth we know only in passing, and only by passing. I would qualify Weil’s statement somewhat, then, by saying that reality, be it of this world or another, is not something one finds and then retains for good. It must be newly discovered daily, and newly lost.”

— Christian Wiman, Gazing into the Abyss

Cy Twombly, rest in peace.  A genuine artist, who I believe lived and worked out of one well tuned and deep font of expression; consistent and beautiful. The Jack Gilbert of painting. The Rilke of the line.  A man after my own heart. I, Esteban, welcome you to these seas of nostalgia.

To multiply the Pond.

Though not the biggest Banksy fan, and in an “it’s complicated” relationship with IKEA,  it seems as though Banksy and Ikea don’t mix.
Apparently this isn’t officially Banksy-confirmed. posted on 11.02.10

Chessgasm.

If you are already intimidated by the sharp logical nature of chess, with its tactics, cleanliness, and mathematical formality, than this brilliantly simple chess set will have you begging for mercy. Josef Hartwig from the Bauhaus school first sculpted this bit of elegance back in 1924 out of cherry wood.  Notice each piece is inspired by its own movement (love that knight).  I would kill for this set but it’s nowhere to be found under several hundred dollars.

Bauhaus Chess

I guess I could just steal it from the MoMA. This, and another variation, is still in the Bauhaus exhibition on the 6th floor until January 24th. While you are there, don’t miss the perfectly complimentary Orozco exhibition right across the way with more chess beauty:

Black Kites

“Black Kites” Gabriel Orozco

and…

Horses Running Endlessly

“Horses Running Endlessly” Gabriel Orozco.  The knight’s movement is the basis for Orozco’s geometric paintings as well.

To end, what’s the deal with the chess knight and it’s secret allure?

Menomena - Evil Bee

“Oh, to be a machine…”

Can we talk about how amazing this video is?  You’ll have to watch this a few times.  Notice that feeling welling up inside you. This is what happens when artists take on the loftiest themes and absolutely succeed.  Enjoy.
